Van Beck Electric Supply Company was started in 1960 by John Vankulich and Vern Beckman as a wholesale and retail operation selling electrical supplies and lighting fixtures. The sales focus was on residential electrical contractors, home builders and the do-it-yourself trade. In 1976 the company was sold to Lou Posa of Elizabeth Township along with his brothers, Steve and Joe. Lou is the President and majority stockholder of Van Beck and he and his brothers operate Elizabeth Electric Supply Co., in addition to Van Beck which is known as the “sister” company. Van Beck maintains its location at 1300 Lincoln Avenue in Charleroi, which is in the Mid Mon Valley Transit building and is open from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday.

Van Beck’s primary market area is the greater Mon Valley area, and the sales focus is now on the commercial and industrial market along with the residential and home improvement.

“The greater Charleroi area along with the rest of the Mon Valley area has always supported us,” says Lou. “And I credit the success of our company to good employees over the years and the benefit of having two locations.”  Posa believes they have better buying power and larger market exposure by having locations in both the upper and lower Mon Valley and the networking accomplished by him and former manager Al Foglia.

The company employs four full-time employees and three part-time employees.

In addition to Al, longtime counterman Bill Cole contributes greatly. Both of these employees worked full-time for over 25 years. They both now still work part-time and their experience is priceless. The new manager, Joe Bosetti brings a wealth of experience and new ideas to the table along with counterman, Ken Hill. Jean Tedrow has run the office flawlessly for over 25 years. Lou Posa feels that the challenge due to the down turn in the economy and the emergence of the big box stores can be met by becoming a niche distributor and to adjust to the times. “We did it in the past and I feel confident we can do it in the future” he said.
